The posting or rising trot is first taught as standing and sitting to the rhythm of the horse as it moves. This is a distinctly up and down motion for the rider. Unfortunately, while effectively keeping the newer rider from interfering with the horse's movement by minimizing how much they bounce on the horse's back it also has to be later untaught. The proper motion of the rider at the rising trot is for them to move their hips forward and backward on a plane parallel to the ground (from the deepest part of the saddle to the pommel).
